Tatua, at 10 years old a veteran of innumerable big handicaps and weight-for-age races, promises to take the Matamata Cup. the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double, and Statute, a mare just half his age, looks the best prospect for the second leg, the Publicans' Handicap. Tatua has not won since the autumn last year but he showed promising dash in bis latest of three attempts this season when third over seven furlongs at Ellerslie last Saturday. With 8-13 he would need to be only somewhere near his best to win. Foxton, a local slx-year-old mare with 7-8, Oddfellow 7-12, E Timi 7-7 and Bright Notes 8-3 will very likely be the hardest for Tatua to beat. Bright Notes is spacially interesting, being an accomplished sprinter which will be trying his first middle distance. Statute, which won a good intermediate sprint double at Te Rapa, in November, has not started since December 6, having been set back by a muscular stiffness but she has usually been capable of a good showing when fresh. This will be her first open race. blaster Hagen, Chenab and Chief Warrior appeal as likely to most test Statute. Sam McGredy has been galloping Impressively at Te Rapa so he might also be a threat.
