RACING Game Fancied For Jackson Stakes

“The Press” Special Service WANGANUI. Twelve months ago the Hastings rider, B. Marsh, gave one of the finest displays of his career in the Jackson Stakes.

On that day at Wanganui, Game (Marsh’s mount) failed by inches to beat the top filly, Mayo Gold, only a few days after Mayo Gold’s magnificent Trentham treble.

Today Marsh will not only get the chance to win the Jackson Stakes on Game, he will also ride one of the best first-leg prospects, Tomray.

Game has three wins and a second from bis last four starts. He beat a good sprint field at Hastings last time ■nd before that had run second behind Piko in the Awapuni Gold Cup, prior to which he had halted the champion three - year - old’s winning streak at Masterton. Best Opponents

Zephyrus and Kalgoorlie look the ones jnost likely to upset Game, if he is going to be beaten.

Zephyrus failed in the Adams Handicap, but he was never really happy on the rock-hard Trentham surface. Before that he had recorded good placings at Ellerslie and Trentham. Today's run will be his last before a spell and he will have a change of rider with W. D. Skelton in the saddle.

Kalgoorlie has a number of fine sprint performances to his credit in the north. Last week he won over six furlongs carrying 9-6. His chances, too, must rate quite highly in this field and he will be ridden as usual by K. Cullen. Dormaranne and Arria make up the field. Dormaranne, was a fair seventh in the Adams Handicap and has a’good deal of ability, although this will be a tough task for her. D. Cullen will ride Arria. She gave a number of fine performances as a two-year-

I old but it has taken her time to find winning form this season. She did just that at Ashhurst and should run well again. Best Prospect Tomray would only have to reproduce his Trentham form to win the Earle Handicap, the first leg of the double. He finished fifth in the Anniversary Handicap and then third in the Adams Handicap. Today’s run will be his first over a middle distance but this should not bother him. Hagen’s Pleasure won at Marton two starts back and then ran on for fifth in the Ashhurst Cup. His chances are good, as are those of Shy Shelma, second at both Marton and Ashhurst. Simon De Monfort was a fine third in Johny Cash’s record Wellington Racing Club Handicap last Saturday, while Highbrow, Prince Hagen, Royal Escort and Carslberg must all be rated highly. The three-year-old Songkoi colt, Souchong, should win his first race as a three-year-old when he contests the Campbell Handicap, the second leg of the double. Like Arria, he has taken time to find form as a three-year-old, but now he seems to be on the verge of winning. The strongest opposition might come from the E. Ropiha representative Fashion Plate, a most consistent mare.

Togo, Cantostan, Coogee and the fresh Ballamour are others who might trouble him. Selections: 11.30 a.m.—Ferdell Nishweight: Tsargo. Tree Tops, Arrowtown. 12.5 p.m.—Koi Iwl Malden.
