JAY AY LIKELY

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand St Leger Winner, Jay Ay, is the early favourite to win the Trafalgar Handicap (Urn.). of $4500, at Flemington today. The Macquario—Passive six-year-old, now trained by the former New Zealander, T. Howe, will be ridden by R. Higgins. Jay Ay won last in February, 1968, but then was spelled for most of the year. He has run well at his last three outings and looks to be improving. The Flemington fields make little appeal and the most New Zealand interest should be in the performance of two-year-olds. In the Talindert Stakes (sf) for fillies Laima (Golden Plume—Lucullent) is third favourite. She has won two races in five starts and worked brilliantly this week. Rata, the first son of Persian Garden to race in Australia. will make his debut in the Mollison Stakes (5f.) for colts and geldings. Rata, a black colt out of Bailor imia. was a cheap ($800) buy at Trentham last year.
