THOMSON’S MENACE

Warning To N.Z. Batsmen (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BRISBANE. The Victorian fast bowler, A. Thomson, served a warning to New Zealand batsmen when he ripped through the Queensland batting line-up in a Sheffield Shield match yesterday. Thomson, reaping the benefit of a rain-affected pitch, took five for 20 off 19 overs; Queensland crumbled to 73 for seven declared at that score, sending Victoria in to bat for 30 minutes before stumps. But the Victorian openers survived the Queensland attack, to be 14 without loss. Thomson dismissed his New Zealand tour captain S. Trimble, for five in his third over, and later broke the left arm of the former English test batsman, T. W. Graveney. Graveney, who is in Brisbane on a coaching assignment for the Queensland Cricket Association, facing his fourth delivery from Thomson, played defensively but was struck by a rising ball.
