$26 A Pan

Sir,—l understand that the rate demand states that lavatories are rated at $26 a pan. This would seem exorbitant when one considers that while additional pans may be installed as a convenient luxury there must be many cases where additions are necessary for a large family, but where the over-all rates are modest, so that $26 a pan would represent quite a large percentage of the total rate demand. Also since one pan suffices to cover the sewerage rate requirements, and the fact that a second installation does not place any extra demand on the'system, since one can only use one pan at a time, the demand for $26 a pan does not appear to be logical.—Yeurs, etc., W. V. DROMGOOLE.

January 16, 1970. [A spokesman for the City Engineer, to whom this letter was referred, replies: “The charge of $26 per pan is made only in cases where properties are not connected to the sewer and a night soil collection is required. Properties connected to the sewer are rated on a valuation basis.”]
