Tender Glass Very few car-owners seem to realise just how “tender” the glass in their windscreen really is, and just how easily it can be scratched. Most' of us, however, know just how difficult it is to drive behind a scratched windscreen, particularly at night when the lights of oncoming cars seem to reflect off every little scratch. A colleague told me the other day how the windscreen on his nearly new car bad been badly scratched: he had driven along a well-gritted section of road, and later when he started his wipers, he did not notice for a few moments that a piece of grit had lodged behind a wiperblade and was being dragged across the glass. By the time he did notice the damage was done, and he was surprised to find that the scratch was so deep it could not be removed. Unfortunately, it is just in the. driver’s line of vision, where it creates maximum annoyance. He is coming to the sad conclusion that the only real remedy is a new windscreen. Keep It Clean He was told that rubbing the scratch with a certain household cleaner well known for its scouring properties would put things right But it did not, for the scratch was much too deep, and he was rightly afraid of rubbing too hard in case he caused even more damage.
