The recent order from the Soviet Union for 50,000 tons of New Zealand mutton and beef reflect a surge in demand from Eastern Europe and the Middle East for New Zealand meat. Trade authorities said today that the reason for the rise in demand was a shortage of domestic supplies. Orders for more than 1000 tons of mutton and hogget had been received from Hungary and Czechoslovakia in recent weeks, and in the last six months inquiries covering the supply of more than 12,000 tons of mutton and lamb and 6000 tons of beef had come from the Middle East A trading company in the United Arab Republic was seeking 6000 tons of mutton and 6000 tons of New Zealand frozen beef, the meat to be shipped over the next six months, the authorities said.
