Smelter Contracts To N.Z. Firms
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 9. Four major contracts for the Bluff aluminium smelter project have been let to New Zealand companies, the chairman of the New Zealand Construction Company, Ltd (Dr R. G. McElroy) said yesterday.
The projects are worth a total of $4,700,000. The New Zealand Construction Company has the over-all contract for the construction of the smelter. Price-Norsteel (fabricators) Ltd, has been awarded the contract for the fabrication of the shells of 204 aluminium smelting furnaces. The furnace superstructures will be constructed by C. W. F. Hamilton and Company, Ltd and D. F. Nuttall Steel, Ltd.
The Fletcher Construction Company, Ltd, has been awarded the contract to erect the pot-room building and the pot repair building. The green carbon plant contract which covers the erection of a building and installation of equipment for producing carbon products has been awarded to FluorUtah Construction Inc. Dr McElroy said the four contracts brought the total
value of contracts let to New Zealand companies to more than $10,000,000. About $BO million will be spent on the first stage of the smelter, which is due to begin production in 1971.
