$100 TO SPONSOR TENNIS PLAYERS
After a letter had been recieved from the Tennis Supporters' Club offering $lOO to sponsor four players on the national circuit, the management committee, of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association decided last evening that the number of sponsored players could be increased if desired. There was some confusion about another $lOO from the management committee because a previous meeting had decided that $lOO would be used to sponsor players. The secretary (Mrs M. Clarke) said that the $lOO was to be drawn from any possible source and the gift of the Supporters’ Club would be appropriate; it was not intended that $2OO would be used for sponsorship. A motion setting $lOO as the maximum amount for sponsorship was carried and it was also deCttfM that five or more playere might be sponsored instead of four after Dr W. J. Smith, repre-
senting the Supporters’ Club, said that this would be justified. Mr H. Dillon suggested that there might be 11 players deserving of sponsorship for the national circuit v However, the treasurer (Mr J. P. Martin) said that some junior players were receiving sponsorship from other sources already, and if they were given extra money they would be receiving more than some seniors. It was decided that five players would be eligible for the extra money.
