SIRENS NOT HEARD
N.Z. Press Association AUCKLAND, Dec. 5. Sirens at fire stations, factories and ships in port blared at H am. today in a major test of the civil defence warning system in metropolitan Auckland. The first reactions were that the coverage appeared uneven and not sufficiently concentrated. Many Queen Street stores and other premises reported that no-one in the buildings had heard the sirens.
Major J. G. Blenkinsopp, the civil defence chief for the Auckland Regional Authority, said he heard the sirens from ships clearly at his office in Hobson Street but his telephone began ringing soon after with complaints from others who had not heard the warning. Independent checks showed that many regions of the city were not reached by the alarm.
One was in the city’s largest hotel. An employee said: “We wouldn’t anyway. This hotel was built to be soundproof.”
