Vehicle Noise
Sir, —Shortly after he took office, the Mayor, Mr Guthrey, was quoted in “The Press” as saying that he intended conferring with the Senior Magistrate in Christchurch regarding the maximum level of noise permitted to be made
by motor vehicles. Has Mr Guthrey carried out his intention? From the lack of any noticeable progress in curbing the exhibitionism of those fiends in human form who make the night hideous with the snarling roar of their modified exhaust system, it would seem not. These antisocial maniacs who persist in drawing attention to themselves deserve a great deal more attention—from the traffic department. Christchurch is too noisy, and this man-made menace must be dealt with firmly before the nerves and hearing of our long-suffering citizens are adversely affected. —Yours, etc., QUIET, PLEASE! September 30, 1969.
[The Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) replies: “Yes.”]
