PLANTING OF FORESTS

Big Increase Sought (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, October 14. New Zealand’s annual forestry planting should be increased from next year’s 57,000 acres to between 70,000 and 80,000 acres, the directorGeneral of Forests (Mr A. L. Poole) said last night. Much sooner than expected, the country had reached the stage where it was short of wood, Mr Poole said. In an address to a dinner marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Forest Service, he said the shortage was shown by the pending sale of 320 million cubic feet of timber from Kaingaroa Forest. “We could sell this amount three or four times over to quite good offers, and we would still be short of wood,” Mr Poole said. “Our planting programme is still modest.” The Minister of Forests (Mr Maclntyre) also hinted at an increased rate of planting.
