HUGE LOSS LIKELY
(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. Melbourne bookmakers say they will lose 61m if Flleur and Rain Lover win this year’s Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double. "We have to face up to this frightening prospect. It will be the worst result since Amounts and Phar Lap sent everyone broke in 1930,” a representative of the doubles bookmaker, John H. Griffiths, said today. "I don't mean that the pay out will be a million. I mean that the loss will be just that,” he said.
Flleur is favourite for the Caullfied Cup and Rain Lover has eased in the straight-out market to second favourite behind Ben Lomond for the Melbourne Cup. "The Fileur-Rain Lover double has got to remain the favourite because of our liabilities,” Griffiths’ representative said.
