DANGER DENIED

Although admitting that two power boats exceeded the speed limit near the Pleasant Point Yacht Club on October 5, the commodore of the New Brighton Powerboat Club (Mr G. Perkins) denied yesterday that participants in the yacht club’s opening day race had been endangered. Earlier this week the yacht club lodged a formal complaint with the Christchurch City Council alleging that two powerboats made runs exceeding 40 miles an hour in a 5 miles an hour area coinciding with the finish of its opening race in which 72 yachts had entered. A letter was sent to the New Brighton Powerboat Club asking it to expel the members concerned and to refuse to enter them in any future powerboat race on the Estuary.

Mr Perkins said his committee had discussed the matter and hoped to arrange an

early meeting with the Pleasant Point Yacht Club. His club wished to resolve the matter as soon as possible to regain the good relations between the two clubs and to avoid more bad publicity. The drivers of the boats were very experienced powerboat competitors, Mr Perkins said.
