Weight training

The value of weight training as a means of increasing body weight, strength and stamina was emphasised by Canterbury Rugby league officials at an evening attended by current and potential representative players recently. The province’s leading players were advised to take only a short rest from training during the summer months. Unless players continued to train in the off-season they would lose the fitness gained during the football season and would have to begin over again when club training sessions resumed next year.

In addition to weight-

training, which has been used successfully by several leading players in New Zealand but to a greater extent by Australian and British footballers, the representative players were advised to continue running during the summer in addition to playing other sports. The Canterbury selectors (Messrs E. Butts, D. L. Blanchard and W. F. McNaughtan), the chairman of the board of control (Mr D. C. Wilson) and the provincial coaching administrator (Mr L. R. Huston) spoke to the players on performances during the 1969 season and the need to prepare for a rigorous season next year.
