Falls Put Cyclist Behind Schedule

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, October 14

Spills and a wrong turn put the Wellington cyclist, Bert Stone, well behind schedule in his attempt to cycle from North Cape to Bluff in five days.

His programme called for him to leave Auckland chief post office at 6.30 a.m. today. Instead he was resting at Coatesville, 17 miles north of Auckland, at 11 a.m. He left the base of the lighthouse at Cape Reinga at 6 a.m yesterday and bad to walk for seven minutes before reaching a road at Kaitaia, he lost an hour’s riding when he took a wrong turn. Road conditions bothered him on the ride south and he took two spills in metal. Both of his palms were cut, making it painful for him to grasp the handlebars. A mob of sheep on a big hill forced him off his bicycle and he had to walk uphill before continuing his ride. He stopped at Waipu last

night after covering 202 miles and rested before resuming at 6 a.m.

He will try to reach Taupo tonight He is booked on the Picton ferry at 10 p.m. tomorrow.
