SOME RISES PERSIST BUT SHAREMARKET WEAKENS

The New Zealand sharemarket weakened yesterday when leaders tended to ease and falls over all outnumbered rises by three to two. Few losses were more than marginal, however, and a handful of issues continued to make good gains.

Almost 60 per cent of the issues closed steady after a day of moderate to busy trading.

New Zealand Petroleum was the exception among leaders, putting on 20c to trade at 240 c, and J. Wattie and K.P. Drug firmed slightly. Eight other leading issues eased.

The strong second-line stocks were headed by Marlin, with a 15c rise to 420 c, Transport Holdings new, up 10c to 270 c in line with the movement to 275 c of the ordinary shares on Monday, and Wilson Cement, which made another 7c to close at 222 c.

Mosgiel, M.S.D. Spiers, Wilson Malt, Seabrook Fowids, N.A.F. rights and Skellerup all added sc. Beach Petroleum gained 40c on its fully paid shares, which traded in Wellington at 330 c.

Armstrong Springhall, which has been selling sporadically between 240 c and 260 c in the last three weeks, fell back 15c to 230 c, and losses of 5c were suffered by Crothall, F. and T. New Zealand, J. Rattray, Reid Rubber and Whitcombe and Tombs. The overseas list was firm, with falls confined to B.N.S.W. (N.Z.), down sc, and G. J. Coles, down 2c. B.H.P. was steady, but Peko Wallsend and W’estem Mining each made 20c.
