World Fencing Contest
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HAVANA. Russia, Sweden, Hungary and Italy qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s team epee in the world fencing championships. The star-studded Soviet team, favoured to win the title, had two tough 9-5 wins over East Germany in preliminary and quarter-final rounds.
The Russian squad, with two former world champions —including A. Nikanchikov who won the individual silver medal last week—includes the bronze medallist, S. Paramonov.
The Hungarians, who won the gold team medal at the Mexico Olympics, are also through to the final. They lost 7-9 to France in the first round, but beat the French 7-3 in the quarter-finals.
