Town Hall Plans

Sir,—The proposal of the Mayor to alter the plans for the civic centre appear to be sadly misguided. Opportunities for the redevelopment of

any central urban area are few and far between, and should be welcomed enthusiastically. Nevertheless, it appears that the age of the nearsighted Kiwi handyman is to Unger on indefinitely. The beauty of the city is a priceless asset which cannot be allowed to be disfigured by bUnd utilitarianism. The mutilation of an inspired plan should not be permitted in order to save pennies for the civic piggy bank. But not to worry! If the new town hall complex does evolve as something of an eyesore, the South Island still has its fields of photogenic sheep and its glaciers with which to lure the tourists.—Yours, etc.. ALICE INWONDERLAND. October 14, 1969.
