Legion Of Merit
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 13. The United States Ambassador (Mr Kenneth Franzheim) today presented the United States Legion of Merit to Colonel R. H. Smith for “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services” while he was in command of the New Zealand Army forces in South Vietnam from August, 1966, to August, 1968. The award is one of the highest that can be bestowed by the United States on a member of another country’s armed forces; and has been, made only once before to a New Zealander. Colonel Smith, who is from Wanganui, is now director of staff duties at Army Headquarters, Wellington.
