N.Z. CHALLENGE NOT ACCEPTED
(From R. T. BRITTENDEN, N.Z.P.A. special correspondent) INDORE. G. T. Dowling declared New Zealand’s second innings closed after 38 minutes batting to set the Indian President’s XI 152 runs to be scored in 124 minutes, a very reasonable task with such a remarkably fast outfield, but the match was drawn.
The opening batsmen spent half an hour gathering only eight and no real effort was made to accept a sporting challenge. Some of the batsmen are regarded as test candidates for matches with Australia and no doubt that influenced them to play safe. Even though New Zealand towards the end used its occasional and expensive bowlers the total at the close of play was no more than 97 for four. D. Trist, in his second appearance for New Zealand, shared with B. R. Taylor the unusual distinction of opening the batting and bowling for his team on the same afternoon.
