Upset On First Night Of Water Polo
The opening evening of the Christchurch water polo competition began in a startling manner last evening when the titleholders, University, lost to Wharenui, 7-5. Results were;— Wharenui 7 (R. B. Erickson 2, T. M. McGirr 2, I. L. Gunthorp, B. Haslett, R. Tweedie). University 5 (K. B. Thornton 2, P. Carpinter 2, I. MacDonald). Jellie Park 3 (P. Sturge 2, D. McKay), Christchurch 3, (C. Reid 2, N. Lanyon). Beckenham 4 (G. Macewan 2, M. Scott, F. McKenzie),
Elmwood 3 (P. G. Hay 2, A, MacKenzie). Wharenui had several lapses during its match but ended the last quarter with a fine goal by Erickson. B. Haslett, a former Auckland representative, played his first match in Christchurch and was Wharenui’s main line of defence. In the Christchurch-Jellie Park match there was far too much body contact, players unnecessarily swimming over their opponents. D. Reid (Jellie Park) was the only notable player in the game, although both P. Sturge and M. Gaudinet, alternating in the Jellie Park goal, made determined efforts.
