Sheep Die
(N.Z. Pres* Association) HAMILTON, Oct. 10. An unknown form of blood poisoning killed 171 ewes at the Lands and Survey Department’s Huiriml sheep station, near Te Awamutu, last month. The sheep, many of them due to lamb, died despite efforts by a veterinarian to prevent their death. The superintendent of the Te Kuiti land development district office, Mr G. W. Palmer,- said that the losses represented 2 per cent of the station ewe flock. This was double the number of normal losses for September. A veterinarian diagnosed the cause of death as blood poisoning, and other animals were vaccinated. But the death toll continued to rise. ‘They didn't respond to treatment," said Mr Palmer. However, no further death* from blood poisoning had been reported this month.
