Wheeler Is Satisfied

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—CornirtgM) SAIGON, October 7. General Earle Wheeler, chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, said today that he was satisfied with the military situation in South Vietnam. “I consider that we are on the right track,” he said. General Wheeler, who was leaving Saigon for the United States 7th Fleet headquarters at Subic Bay in the Philippines, after a three-day visit to South Vietnam, told reporters: “I am satisfied that the total military situation here offers solid support to our negotiations in Paris. “Progress in Vietnamisation—that is the improvement and modernisation of the South Vietnamese armed forces—is being steadily and realistically achieved.” Asked to comment on President Nguyen Van Thieu’s ’‘“tement yesterday that South Vietnam was determined to replace the bulk of the United States fighting units by the end of 1970, the Seperal said: “Obviously, is hope that ®veryone j think that the South Vietnamese desire to protect their own country.”
