The British Liberal Party leader (Mr Jeremy Thorpe) has asked supporters for £500,000 to wipe out the party’s debts.

Earlier, the party’s executive had announced the appointment of a committee to examine the party’s grave finances, and Mr Pratap Chitnis, its principal organiser, had resigned. Mr Chitnis, who had been head of party organisation since 1966, said: “I consider the reasons for my resignation basically a matter between me and my employers.” An official announcement said that the executive recognised the need for drastic financial economies.
