Game Reserve

An inter-departmental oversight of many years standing has been set right by a Gazette notice which transfers 573 acres of reserve on the shore of Lake Ellesmere from the Lands and Survey Department to the Department of Internal Affairs. The reserve, on the western shore of the lake, has for many years been a wild-life refuge and is under the control for ranging and game management of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. “The reserve is pretty well all swamp, with spring holes Bft to 9ft deep, and a most dangerous place for anyone not familiar with it,” said the society’s secretary (Mr H. B. Barker).
