Technical Has Third Soccer Success

Technical won its third soccer competition of the season on Saturday and is favourite to take the fourth—and last—next week-end. By outplaying Shamrock, 5-0, collecting $5 in the process, Technical won the “Dollars for Goals” competition, having an unbeatable lead with one round still to play.

Next Saturday, the dub wiO play in the final of the English Cup, meeting . either Christchureh City or New Brighton, who will meet

in their semi-final on Wednesday night. Technical had earlier won the pre-seMOn Bangers floodlight competition and the flrst division pf the southern league. Western also collected $3 worth of goals with an equally resounding, 5-0 victory over Shirley-Nomads, while City and Rangers drew, 2-2, in the main game at English Park. The Chatham Cup finalist. New Brighton, went down, 2-5, to Northern in their outstanding southern league match, and by its defeat, the seasiders dropped to seventh place in the flrst division table —.019 of a goal behind Shamrock. Results and tables were: "Dellars Ser Mi” Technical S, Shamrock 0; City 2, Bangere 2; Wettern S. Shir-ley-Nomads 0.

It was the goal* nearly ■cored, rather than those actually netted, that lifted the Rangers-City match out of the end-of-s«ason rut at English Park. Th* score was 2-2 midway through the second halt when the ball began playing ping-pong with the woodwork and leaving a handful of spectator* In near hysterics. The City left wing, F. Mad-

russen, and the Ranger* young inside left, G. Dacomb,, were the victims of the piece, Madrusaen twice. The flrst lime, he cut In. drove with hit often neglected right foot and shot fficainot th® Bar. He had hardly brought hl* ■rat down from beseeching bettor justice from the god* when he drove goalwards again. The Ranger* goal-keeper. D. Spraggs expected the ball to go outside; instead it hit the foot of the post and rebounded tor Spraggs to make his clearance. Spraggs smiled broadly; Madrussen looked thunderstruck. STAUMATH BBMAIHBD But If these two escapes bad th* crowd tingling, they almost doubled up only a few minutes later. Dacombe. on a narrow angle, shot for goal, with the City 'keeper, A. Fleming, on the ground, at leest Are yards out. Dacombe'* shot hit his near post, rebounded flrst bounce into Fleming's hands, with another two Rangers' players unmarked, and certain to score had tfte ball veered a foot or two of its direct line to Fleming. It would have been an anticlimax had either side been able to break the 3-3 stalemate after that, so that the drawn result Stui left the runner-up position in the "Dollar* for Goals" competition wide open, with Hangers, City and western It* contender*. - Msdrussen and Watson scored for City, B. Hammond and Daeombe for Rangers. FULL-BACKS ECMH Technical and Western were both too strong for Shamrock and Shirley-Nomads. respectively, tn the other "Dollars for Goals” matches on Saturday.

and each won by 8-0 margin*. The Technical right ring, B. Wilkinson laid on three of Ms side’s goal*. Including one each for the full-backs. G. Davis and K. Pahl. Davis got his first and It soon became obvious that Pahl was not going to allow his defensive colleague to put one Over Mm. Technical's other goal* came from D. Finney, I. Marshall and R. Provan. Wertern had another member of the smith family, Russell, son bf th. former national selector, Mr G. S. Smith, making his senior debut, against Shirley. and he celebrated the occasion by getting one of the team’s go*la. The other came from T. Langan (3), and M. Smith (31. DUHEDIN “BATTLE" The southern league programme ended on a sour note when alleged "home team refereeing" produced a torrid match between New Brighton and Northern, at Dunedin. The Brighton goal-keeper. R. Storer, had hi* name taken, three Brighton players were dissuaded from walking off by the club coach, Mr G. spiers, and each side was awarded a penalty. The surprising thing was that no-one was sent oft. Brighton went U>to a two goal lead, through. W. Quirke and G. Taylor, and then mlased a penalty, before Northern struck back as if the side was claying a Chatham Cup final. The Dunedin club had equalised soon after the start of the second half and went on to score three more. Temper* became frayed under robust, da nr er ous tackling, and the final whistle came as a relief to all concerned in the battle.
