Sixth Win For Piko

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Piko scored his sixth win and took a mortgage on the Hawke s Bay Guineas this Wednesday with his success tn the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes at Te Rapa on Saturday. He has now had 16 races and on only two occasions finished further back than third. His failures were in his first two races when a two-year-old and the first two this season. There is not the slightest doubt Piko would have won the Breeders' Stakes in any circumstances but the minor placing* might have been a bit different but for Ahjay's veering to The outside when in front on the home turn. With his tongue over the bit. Ahjay hung and hampered St Bruce, who had to be steadied so as not to be taken to the outside. St Bruce came on again very bravely for third, nosing out Corrandulla. My Voli ran very creditably for second al! the same. As she often does. My Voli began slowly and ran on most determinedly. With Piko being allowed to take it a trifle easily she whittled away his lead through the last half furlong. Corrandulla. in his first race of the season, shaped encouragingly. and Shield Bearer, barely out of maiden company, went a great deal better than expected when a close fifth.

Ahjay, the bit through his mouth, dropped out to ninth, and another disappointment was Habanita. Unable to go the early speed. Habanita was quickly in a bad position. Without much room she battled through for sixth. The fast filly, Indian Jewel, was sold for $7OOO to a Japanese syndicate on Friday. She was scratched as a consequence for the Cambridge Breeders' Stakes and is unlikely to race again in New Zealand.
