FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A weak ridge of high pressure is moving east over the North Island; a deep depression near Macquarie Island is moving quickly south-east and the associated cold front will be crossing the South Island today and moving on to the south-west of the North Island this evening. Forecast:

Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.— North-westerlies strong at times; increasing cloud; rain about the Alps; some scattered falls elsewhere later with winds decreasing and becoming variable; mild. Central Marlborough and the Marlborough Sounds.—North-westerlies strong in exposed places; partly cloudy this morning but cloud increasing later; some rain this evening or tonight; moderate temperatures. Nelson.—Moderate variable winds tending northerly; increasing cloud; showers about the ranges becoming widespread by evening; moderate temperatures. Buller and Westland.— Cloudy; scattered showers this morning but more widespread rain by afternoon; winds, moderate or fresh from the northerly quarter, turning southwest in the south of Westland this evening; moderate temperatures. Outlook.—All districts: south-westerlies; cooler.
