Trays To Return
Two handsome silver trays which Wellington presented to the officers and sergeants of the British 65th Regiment in 1856 are being returned to the city in a goodwill gesture. The regiment, the York and Lancaster, was in New Zealand from 1846 to 1865. It was disbanded last year. The trays are engraved: “From the citizens of Wellington ... as a token of gratitude for zealous services in extinguishing a fire on Sunday, April 27,1856.” The fire destroyed many buildings, including the Post Office, and losses were estimated at $25,000. The aftermath was a meeting of citizens, which collected $220 for the formation of Wellington’s first fire brigade.—London, September 21.
