U.S. Bases

Sir,—Today’s news item on the testing of nerve gases in Hawaii highlights the risks involved in United States bases in New Zealand. Dr Robert Cooksey, of the Australian National University, spoke recently in Christchurch of the growth of United States bases in Australia and of the lack of Australian control of these. We in New Zealand must become aware of the danger of United States bases here. Do we want our country to be used for the testing of weapons too dangerous for the people of the United States? We cannot say it would be impossible here. That is probably exactly what the people of Hawaii were saying in 1966 and 1967, when the toxic gases were being tested only 15 miles from a city with a population of 28,000 —this at a base leased for “classified meteorological and related tests.” In the words of Interview 69, “Why doesn’t somebody do something?"—Yours, etc., ALISON NEALE.
