Avonhead Trek Raises $l300
More than 100 persons between the ages of about 16 and 60. including many wellknown Christchurch persons, helped to raise $l3OO for the Avonhead Play Centre fund at a sponsored trek held by the centre in the Avonhead area on Saturday. The money, which was the amount it was hoped to raise, will be used to make alterations to the play centre’s hall, Mrs J. M. Cleave, a member of the trek committee, said yesterday that the trek included two circuits of a mile each, one in the Avonhead Road and Maidstone Road area and the other towards Waimairi Road. The walkers began at 9.30 aan. and for the next two hours they were able to com-, plete as many circuits as they wished. The number of miles covered by persons ranged from about six to 11, said Mrs Cleave. Among those taking part in the trek were the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly), the manager of the Christchurch Airport (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson), who earned $7B, the highest amount for one person, the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr R. W. J. Harrington), the chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr D. B. Rich), Dr J. Moffat, a senior lecturer at the Christchurch Teacher’s College, Brendan Dugan, the country and western singer and D. Mackenzie, a Canterbury athlete. . The person with the most sponsors was Mr V. J. Dennison of Avonhead with 76.
