FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anticyclone is slow-mov-ing west of the North Island. A strong disturbed westerly airstream over the South Tasman Sea flows on to the South Island. Forecast: Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.— Moderate north - easterlies predominating about the coast; fresh north-westerlies inland; increasing cloud this morning, with some rain in the foothills of the Alps; scattered light falls elsewhere this afternoon; cool. Central Marlborough and the Marlborough Sounds.—North-west winds, strong and gusty near Cook Strait, otherwise fresh; some areas of cloud about the Sounds, otherwise fine; moderate temperates. Nelson.—Freshening south - westerlies; fine and rather mild this afternoon. Buller and Westland.—Moderate west to south-west winds; cloudy and cool, with occasional rain, more persistent in the south. Outlook: Some showers on the West Coast, otherwise partly cloudy.
