Farm Labour Shortage
Sir,—What is wrong with . agricultural students "accept- , tag and then rejecting” their t farm vacation jobs for better . wages and conditions? Have I not we the right to arbitrate? i Are we young puppies sub- ' servient to our master’s big ■ stick? Surely this is not . “playing ducks and drakes.” i but simply exercising a > simple democratic right to determine our best opportunity. Anybody would think we , were indeed privileged and t duty-bound to work for fartn- , ers. This year, because of the . increased demand for labour, . supplies are relatively short, I so that agricultural students -no longer have to accept ; farmers' archaic and redun- • dant principles upon wages • and working conditions. No i doubt if these were modified • then this “desperate farm lab- ; our shortage” would not be i “a matter of very great con--1 cern." But this year we are ■ holding the big stick, and it 1 is our turn to determine the ! wages and conditions of em- • ptoyment—Yours, etc., G. A TWEEDIE. ' August 26, 1969.
