DEATH BY FIRE

A 19-year-old part-time student has died of burns suffered when he set himself on fire to show Russian occupiers he would rather die “with my head held high than live on my knees,” his friends said yesterday. Jan Poiasek, a plumber in a textile factory, soaked his clothes with petrol on Thursday during an anti-Soviet demonstration
in this Moravian capita! and ran blazing into Svoboda (Freedom) Square. He was .taken to a military hospital near Brno where he died on Sunday, the friends said.
“I knew what I was doing,” the friends quoted Mr Poiasek as saying. “But it was better for me to die with my head held high than to live on my knees.”
