Prince Charles’s Gift To Nation

(M.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, August 26. Prince Charles has offered the nation half of his yearly income, and the Govern* ment has promptly accepted his gift.

Britain, beset by economic woes, will gain about £llO,OOO t a year from the income the 1 Prince of Wales will receive < after his twenty-first birthday i on November 14. i The money comes from < rents in South-west England and parts of London on pro-; perty Hie Prince owns as the i Duke of Cornwall, one of the i eight titles he possesses. Among the money-making 1 properties are Dartmoor Pri-; son and a large, recently-' renovated housing estate near ; the Oval cricket ground in ■ Kennington, South London. Until now, all the revenue from the dukedom of Corn-. wall has gone to the Queen, to help her to meet her Royal expenses. Since 1952, an estimated s2}m has gone for this ’purpose.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman says that the ’ Prince’s agreement with the i Government is subject to review, either on. his marriage or at some other important change in his circumstances. The gift is not assigned for any set purpose, ajpi the money goes into the Government’s Consolidated Fund. Prince Charles’s gift follows a precedent set by his great-uncle, the Duke of Windsor, who gave the nation part of his income when he was Prince of Wales. The £llO,OOO remaining will be used by the Prince to cover the expenses of his official duties and staff salaries. The funds from the dukedom of Cornwall are the Prince’s sole source of income art present. I
