INDONESIAN STUDENTS
Party To Visit Christchurch Thirty Indonesian students studying in New Zealand will visit Christchurch next week and on August 27 win present an evening of songs and dances of their country in the Teachers’ College Hall. The president of the Canterbury branch of the New
Zealand-Indonesia Association (Mr A. Cargo) said that the concert party would be accompanied by the Indonesian Charge d’Affairs in New Zealand (Mr H. Rumamby). Included in the programme would be an umbrella dance, scarf dance, and other traditional dances and songs. Per-, formances were to be given in| Auckland and Wellington and would include for the first time in New Zealand a sha-
dow dance in which the characters are leather puppets. Manipulated from behind a screen, they cast shadows on it Shows are traditional and in Indonesia continue for many hours. Mr Cargo said the students were studying a; the English Language Institute in Wellington. The visit to Christchurch was one of good will aimed at fostering a greater understanding of the life and people of Indonesia.
