BASKETBALL

Canterbury Beats Army The Canterbury men's basketball team recovered from an early deficit to beat New Zealand Army. 52-45, in an Interesting match at Burnham last evening. Canterbury took a winning lead in the early minutes of the second half after It bad led, 21-19. at the Interval. Four minutes after the resumption, Canterbury's lead had been widened to 10, and it held this until the last few minutes when Army, led by C. Costello, fought back well.

The Canterbury, defence appeared the more sound, and it capitalised on any ill-directed shooting by the Army players to mount offensives with long throws. Army was forced to work harder for its goals, although Costello’s accuracy with free throws proved a productive source of points. A. Hounsell and K. Luxton shared the scoring honours for Canterbury, Hounsell’s total being kept within limits because of the close attention given to him by Costello. Scores: Canterbury 52 (Hounsell 12. Luxton 12, I. Day 10, D. Rattray 10. M. Clements 4. G. Dempsey 2, G. Phillips 2) beat Army 45 (Costello 19, J. Fairhurst 9. Seymore 6, P. Pihema 5, Jensen 4, P. Dyson 2).
