Kumai In Dashing Trial

The rising 12-year-old, Kumai, showed his sprightly qualities in running one of the fastest half-miles of the training on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday.

He matched the rising three-year-old Princess Mellay and Banerva to the finish, and their time, 52 4-ssec, was not bettered in a quiet momlag’s training. Kumai was ridden by G. Jackson, Banerva by R. McAra, and the Cashmere Plate candidate, Princess Mellay, by her race rider, A, K. Robinson.

Mrs H. A. Anderton refused $lO,OOO for Princess Mellay last week.

The Mellay filly has won three races from the stable of her owner’s husband at Wingatui. She will be the only stable runner in the Cashmere Plate; Trelay, impressive winner of the Haldon Stakes last Saturday, will be reserved for the final day of the Grand National meeting. SHderule, whose six starts in the season r about to end produced four’ wins, has returned to Riccarton in good shape to start a fresh cam-

paign in the Paparua Handicap on Saturday. He was paired with his stablemate Anvil (Sutherland) for a half-mile yesterday, and they recorded 53 3-5 sec, then working solidly for another furlong or so before being eased. R. Weaver rode Sliderule in the gallop.. The race rider will be E. J. Didham.

Billy Joe shaped as if he will be one of Canterbury’s best in the Paparua Handicap when he beat Angel in from the half-mile by two lengths in 54 l-ssec.

Billy Joe was in a bad way with an internal complaint soon after he ran sixth at Trentham on July 5, but he has shaken off the trouble He was third in the Paparua Handicap a year ago and has run many more solid races in the meantime. The stablemates, Kiowa (F. Skelton) and Ronray (Lee), recorded 53 4-ssec for their half-mile.

Crepe de Chine (Smith) and Golden Promise (M. McCann) worked up to speed near the six furlongs and ran the last half-mile in 54 1-5 sec. Crepe de Chine should be all the better for her fourth fresh up in tile Camlk Hack Handicap last Saturday. Tumble (A. Eastwood)

sprinted half a mile down the back in 54sec, and Persian Raider (Meier) and Count O’Cally (Lewin) equalled that in running over the softer ground in the home straight. Sailing Home (M. Skelton) and Watchman (Lo>w) recorded Imin 20sec for six furlongs, the last half-mile in 54sec. Sailing Home is a fit light-weight for the Paparua Handicap. The stablemates, Nursie (R. McCann) and Lord Macquarie (Moir) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 55 l-ssec. Lord Macquario is a form runner for the Avonhead Handicap after a close second at Washdyke, and a win earlier at Riccarton.
