Youth Arrested After Flight

HASTINGS, July 4.

Two detectives arrested the Tokanui Hospital absconder, Trevor John Betts, aged 18, in Marine Parade, Napier, at 8 pan. today, six hours after a light aircraft taken from Hamilton had landed in a paddock at Meeanee, three miles away.

Betts, who absconded from the hospital soon after 10.30 a-nu, said he had not eaten since he left the hospital. Betts was charged with escaping from custody. He win appear in" Napier MagisStrato’s Court tomorrow morning. The Cessna aircraft, owned by the Waikato Flying School,

was taken without permission from Hamilton this morning.

The aircraft dived low over central Hamilton and “buzzed” the city police station. The police later had reports of several sightings , over the Waikato Valley be- . fore they were advised that . the plane had landed at . Meeanee. The police, with tracker [ dogs, this afternoon searched , the Napier district. - Buses, cars and other vehicles were searched at road blocks established on all outlets from the area. The aircraft was apparently undamaged, though the tailplane was streaked with mud. From wheel marks, it appeared that the aircraft landed on a true path* and made a half turn before comi ing to a halt The aircraft was l down to its last drop of fuel.
