Restitution Order Refused

(N.Z. Press Association)

GISBORNE, July 4.

The Gisborne Magistrate (Mr W. M. Willis) declined today to make an order for restitution for motorists whose vehicles were stolen after they had left their keys in the ignition. If these people wanted to get their money back they could sue in the civil eourt, the Magistrate said. They should not expect the court to look after their property when they were careless. The Magistrate was dealing with Owen Lew Maraki, aged 18, a factory hand, who was appearing for sentence on three charges of burglary and eight of unlawfully taking motor vehicles. Maraki was sentenced to Borstal training. The Magistrate said that damage done to the vehicles amounted to $llOO, and Maraki’s share was $443.92. Maraki did not have 443 c, let alone $443.
