SELWYN BRIDGE

Progress On Widening

Work on widening the deck ef the Selwyn River bridge on the Main South Road is well under way. The carriageway will be 24ft, instead of the former 18ft, and will have a 2ft kerb on each side. The decking, made of Bin by 2in treated pinus laminated beams, is prefabricated In Christchurch and laid in baulks across the kerbs of the concrete bridge. Three inches of concrete overlay under the old seal is being chipped away from the bridge surface, to com--pensate for the extra weight of the wooden beams on the bridge piers. The wooden beams will be covered with three inches of asphalt road surface.

The work is due to be finished in August when the 1050 ft-long bridge will be opened to traffic again. At present the road detours through the dry riverbed.
