Strong Teams In Squash

Squash rackets of a high standard should be

seen over the week-end when the national teams’ competitions are played at the Christchurch dub courts in Chester Street.

First round games will begin this afternoon, the semifinals tomorrow afternoon and the finals oh Monday morning.

In the Cousins Shield for men’s teams, Henderson, led by S. O’Dwyer and N. Barbour, is the likely winner. O’Dwyer and the third player, D. Scott, were the semi-final-ists in the Canterbury championships last year. Another

measure of the team’s standard is that Henderson has as reserve F. N. Coe, a New Zea-

land selector and former national representative. Hamilton, seeded second to Henderson, has L. Greene at number one and the experienced L. M. O’Neill, another former New Zealand representative, in third position.

The Christchurch team of B. V. Hamilton, R. Tiylor, T. L. Williams,'J. S. Crosbie, and L. G. Milne has'beep, drawn against Mitchell Park (Wellington). It can be given little chance of winning as Mitchell Park appears a very well balanced team which may be considered Unlucky to have been given second' seeding. If it beats Christchurch Mitchell Park will meet Henderson in the semi-finals. In the other half of the draw, the winner of Timaru and Kawaroa Park (New Plymouth) will play Hamilton.

There are five teanis in the Mitchell Cup for women. The Christchurch team, which consists of Mrs R. Woodhead, Mrs P. Leopold, Miss J. Webb. Miss B. Bowbyes and Mrs H. Thomson, Will meet Hamilton in the first round. As with the men, Christchurch will have to play well above its usual form to have any chance of going on to the semi-finals. Hamilton is led by Mrs A. Stevens, who has won the New Zealand title on several occasions.

With Mrs P. Buckingham and Miss A. Buscke leading, Remuera should justify its top seeding, although the other likely finalist, Palmerston North, has the . present New Zealand champion, Mrs V. Biss, and the ,well performed Miss J. Hislop in the two top places.
