PALMER OUT

Open Golf Entry

(N.Z. P.A. -Re uter—Copy right) LONDON.

The British Open golf ehampionship, which will begin next week, has been robbed of much glamour by the withdrawal yesterday of the American, A. Palmer, twice winner of the title. Palmer cabled the Royal and Ancient Golf- Club that he regretted he would be unable to participate in the championship. No doubt the R. and A. will regret his withdrawal even more.

Palmer, still one of the most popular personalities in world golf, has always been one of the big drawcards at the Open in recent years.

His lack of success in the last two years is the main reason Palmer has withdrawn. He,has slipped to fifteenth this year in the United States P.GA. prize-money list and wants to climb back into the first 12 to win a place in the United States Ryder Cup team which will play in England in September. Palmer filled in the Open entry form several months ago and promised to play if he won the United States Masters or the United States Open. However, he failed in both and has decided to concentrate on the American circuit.
