NEW HOTEL PROJECT

Australian Interest The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) would like to see an internationalstandard hotel built either in Cathedral Square, Victoria Square or on the existing library site. "Such a hotel would need to be in the centre of the city or very close to it,” he said yesterday. "I should think the site of the Savoy Theatre in Cathedral Square, somewhere around Victoria Square or where the library is would be ideal.” Mr Guthrey confirmed that an Australian firm with a New Zealand subsidiary was investigating building such a hotel in Christchurch and would make a decision before the end of the year. Mr Guthrey saw no reason why such a hotel could not be successful and generate greater business in the tourist industry.

He had found on a very 1 recent visit to Auckland that the two big city hotels, the Intercontinental and the South Pacific, were now doing good business and plans were in hand to build a third major hotel on land reclaimed by the Auckland Harbour Board. “If they cart have three such hotels up there I think we can manage one here,” he said.

The Mayor agreed with the contention of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce that there was a need for a major hotel in Christchurch. “The City Council has been doing all it can to encourage one,” he said.
