Derailed Engine

WESTPORT, July 3. Railway gangs early this evening completed a deviation around a derailed 68-ton diesel engine which ran off the rails and rolled on its side in the Buller Gorge last night No-one was hurt in the mishap. Two 40-ton lifting cranes from Christchurch and Dunedin are expected to lift the engine tomorrow. The diesel—new from Japan—was hauling a train of 25 waggons from Christchurch to Westport when it ran into a slip after rounding a bend near Tiroroa, about seven miles from Westport The engine and two loaded waggons left the line, the engine toppling on its side.
