BOARD CHAIRMAN SUPPORTED
“I am concerned that Mr Sutton has been publicly attacked for a fair and honest statement made at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce,” said the president (Mr R. C. Wallace) yesterday.
“It ill behoves the member for Lyttelton, who has never been reluctant to express his views, to complain that he has not been formally invited to support Lyttelton as a container port. “Surely, as member of Parliament representing the Lyttelton electorate, he should consider it his bounden duty to keep himself abreast of developments in his own constituency and to be the first to make known locally his views on matters of such public interest. “At our council meeting, Mr Sutton made a careful and balanced survey of the expected development of the lort of Lyttelton, and this las been fairly reported in the newspapers. He was
specifically asked whether any South Island member of Parliament had made a public statement in favour of Lyttelton as a container port. “I believe he had no alternative but to say that no member had come out publicly on this issue. As chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board,'Mr Sutton has the full support of my chamber in the admirable job he is doing" on behalf of the people of Canterbury. He deserves their full support,” said Mr Wallace.
