Accommodation For Tourists
Sir,—Mr H. R. Wigley has made a statement about higher charges for tourists. Surely he must be joking. Are we yet in a position to discriminate among the classes of people we want to visit New Zealand? It will be a great pity if the Australian newspapers give this statement publicity. The average New Zealander is allowed to take less money out of the country than the Australians. Most of the chain stores in the world today prefer volume to class distinction. Mr Wigley should take a good look at the Tourist Hotel Corporation and compare its charges with .private enterprise, which after all stands on its own feet or goes broke. At Franz Josef, where there is a very luxurious hotel another two lots of motels to accommodate 70 people are being erected by private enterprise. I am sure it must have something to do with the exorbitant charges.— Yours, etc., ANTI-CLASS DISTINCTION. June 17, 1969.
