Scots Bank For Women Only
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, June 17. Edinburgh has Europe’s sole women-only bank, modelled on one in Auckland. A branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, it is run by Scotland’s only woman bank manager, Miss Margaret Reid. Miss Reid had the job of persuading Edinburgh to take the bank seriously when it was opened in 1964. The novelty has worn off and head office says that .business has exceeded expectations. At first, says Miss Reid, men felt embarrassed about doing business there, but this has changed. Their cheques are cashed but they cannot open accounts at the branch. Miss Reid’s customers, from a wide area round Edinburgh, are housewives, students and retired women. They can have free coffee, make telephone calls and wait for friends in the bank. They can also use the gold wallpapered powder room to change for an evening out.
Hasty Dumplings.—lf • you do not have time to make dumplings a delicious substitute can be made with fresh bread. Blend 1 egg into about i pint of stock, dunk the cubed bread in this and then .fry until golden brown.
