Big Load In Tunnel
An articulated transporter carrying a 74-ton manufacturing press from Lyttelton to Christchurch took an hour to inch through the 12 mile Christchurch-Lyt-telton road tunnel early this morning. The load, at a height of 14ft s}in, barely cleared the roof of the tunnel and had to zig-zag to take advantage of varying heights in the tunnel, said the duty superviser for the Christ-church-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority (Mr A Gardner). The 60ft transporter was escorted by radio-equipped vehicles ahead and behind. Other vehicles using the tunnel were able to pass but care was needed.
